Flashback Friday: Miracle on Ice
The “Miracle on Ice” took place at the Winter Olympics on February 22, 1980 in Lake Placid, New York. It was the hockey game between the United States and Soviet Union (modern day Russia). The Soviet Union had won the gold medal six out of the seven previous Olympic games.
Columnist Dave Anderson wrote in the New York Times, “Unless the ice melts, or unless the United States team or another team performs a miracle, as did the American squad in 1960, the Russians are expected to easily win the Olympic gold medal for the sixth time in the last seven tournaments.”
Many remember the “Miracle on Ice” to this day. It gave hope to the U.S hockey team for generations to come, even today. This year the score was 2-2 in the game against Russia.
In 1980 Fenton also had a hockey team made up of 22 students and Coaches John Wood, Bud Bubnar and Head Coach Jerry Wendell. Wendell’s faith in the team turned them into Metro League champs when many people expected them to have a rebuilding year. The Tigers’ season record was 18-3-2 making them leaders in the metro. The team won the Metro League Crown but lost at the state regional level to Flint Powers 8-2. They had a very solid defense.
