Over the summer, Fenton Area Public Schools (FAPS) made updates to increase security districtwide. Two new measures were installed that will detect any potential threats to Fenton administration, staff or students.
One feature that is new to FAPS is the ZeroEyes, which is a video analytics platform that utilizes existing district cameras that are posted around each entrance around the district. According to zeroeyes.com, ZeroEyes is an AI-powered gun detection solution that is an extension to existing cameras. The system detects firearms and will send alerts out 3-5 seconds after locating a possible threat. A designated Fenton staff or security member has access to watch every camera at all times.
“Fenton Area Public Schools remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff,” Superintendent Heidie Ceisielski said. “By implementing this cutting-edge technology, we are taking proactive steps to enhance our crisis management capabilities and protect our school community. In conjunction with our existing safety protocols, we believe that new systems like ZeroEyes will significantly bolster our ability to prevent and respond to potential threats.”
In addition to ZeroEyes, FAPS has also installed “Safer Schools Together” to receive possible threats through social media and other online platforms. It utilizes key words and filters to enhance the safety of the district by sending alerts if one is detected, allowing for proactive intervention. According to saferschoolstogether.com, this service is a valuable prevention tool for identifying students on the pathway to violence, suicide, radicalization and/or gang involvement. This system is managed outside of the district by Safer Schools Together.
FAPS will continue to make improvements when it comes to security in attempts to keep the district safe.
