On Oct. 16, students in International Baccalaureate (IB) French and Spanish classes will take a field trip to the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA). They will be looking at the artwork of famous French and Hispanic artists. The students will go on a docent-led tour for the DIA to fully understand the artwork’s meaning and the influence of the artists they’re studying. They will also participate in a scavenger hunt to explore the museum and connect their field trip to the topics they have discussed and learned about in their class.
This docent-led tour is an opportunity for these students to learn interesting information on the artwork they are viewing and the history behind it. These details help them connect their field trip experience to what they are learning in class.
This is IB Language’s fourth year taking this field trip. Previously, it had been done virtually with the Cleveland Museum of Art. This trip relates to the art and architecture unit studied in these French and Spanish classes.
“Infused in this naturally is history and how culture and language has evolved,” IB Spanish teacher Hillary Fischer said. “We talk about why art was so commonly used.”
Not only is this trip a great learning experience for these students, it is also a fun and fascinating adventure.
