289 WORD RANT: Snow Days

Kelsie Lane, Writer

Today, I woke up to a bright light shining from my window, the hallmark of a beautiful winter morning. And I immediately knew something had gone terribly, terribly wrong. Hastily I checked my phone and saw that it was 8:30. My alarm hadn’t gone off. Even worse than that, it was a snow day.

Now, one could wonder why I was so upset. It’s a snow day, no school, how exciting. The phrase “snow day” conjures up images from our youths, of playing outside, building snow forts, and coming in to hot chocolate. But that whimsical image couldn’t be further from reality. These days, my snow day consists of sitting inside, watching television, messing around online, or doing the homework I was planning on doing at the last possible minute. Snow days mark a gap in our schedules, where there are no plans and nothing to do, like a friend canceling on you at the last minute.

Even so, a snow day alone isn’t enough to warrant such a fuss. There are some days when I would be thrilled to be out of school, specifically, B days. B days for me consist of all my science and math classes, while my A days consist of arts and humanities courses. I went to bed last night excited to start my Monday morning with an art class, and even looked forward to the rest of my schedule. However, now I have to start my school week with a B day, and I can’t be expected to bring my A-game. That is, unless someone’s willing to give me a snow day tomorrow. I’m just saying, I’ll be putting a spoon under my pillow tonight, and I hope you all follow suit.
