With the state and presidential elections quickly approaching, students may want to start thinking about registering to vote. With the seemingly confusing world of the Secretary of State and City Hall, it is important to know where to begin when registering.

According to the Michigan.gov website, in order for a person to be registered to vote they must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old by election day, a resident of Michigan and a resident of the city where they are applying to vote. They also must obtain a voter registration form.

“A voter registration form can be obtained online,” Fenton City Clerk Renee Wilson said. “It can also be obtained at any Secretary of State Branch, the two closest are located in Flint and Highland; or by coming into your local City Clerk’s office, located on 301 S. Leroy St.”
With this in mind, many upperclassmen may are eligible to vote in the election coming up March 8.

“One of the most important things to remember when registering to vote is that to be eligible you must be registered 30 days prior. For example, to be eligible to vote in the March 8, 2016 Presidential Primary election, a person had to be registered by Monday, Feb. 8, 2016.”
There is no better time than now to register to vote. In order to register, a current ID is needed as well as either a driver’s license or the last four digits of a social security number.
