It has become a tradition nationwide for seniors to decorate their caps for their graduation ceremony; however, at Fenton High this is prohibited. According to Principal Michael Bakker and Fenton administration, FHS keeps graduation very formal and decorating caps takes away from the uniformity of the ceremony and graduating class as a whole.
Despite this reasoning, many FHS students feel decorating caps is a fun way to stand out and show off creativity and accomplishments on such a special day. Because of this, a petition to decorate caps is being passed amongst the Class of 2024.
“What prompted me to start this petition is the increase in inquiries from my classmates about whether we can decorate our caps or not.” Senior Class President Isabelle Yambrick said. “Every class president for the past couple of years has tried to get administrators on board with the idea, so I thought approaching the admin with proof may help persuade them.”
To date, 116 out of 263 seniors have signed the petition, but even though the school board has supported decorating caps, FHS administration stands by the decision not to allow it.
