As the weather becomes warmer and the flowers start to bloom, ice cream starts to occupy the minds of people longing for the summer sun. Fenton contains several different places to obtain this hot commodity, but two stick out the most. Uncle Rays and The Scoop of Fenton. Which one is better?
Opening in 1978, Uncle Rays, located on N. Leroy St., has been an icon in Fenton as the number one place to get ice cream. Their range of flavors are specifically handmade every morning and night for customers of all ages to enjoy. During each season, specialty flavors can be found on the menu and are brought back each year. For the people who aren’t fond of ice cream, Uncle Rays offers a wide range of frozen yogurts, to which several combinations of fruits and toppings can be added.
The Scoop of Fenton is a more recent addition to the mix of ice cream locations across town. Located right in the center of downtown at 111 W Shiawassee Ave., The Scoop of Fenton is part of two locally owned ice cream establishments across Michigan. Unlike Uncle Rays, their menu and range of ice creams consists of the generic Hersey’s flavors. Their specialty toppings however, are extravagant pieces of artwork. Themed desserts are a staple of The Scoop of Fenton, and are popularly posted on social media apps.
When it comes to having good ice cream, quality and price are major factors to the popularity of each ice cream establishment. Both Uncle Rays and The Scoop of Fenton are about the same price for simple ice creams, but when it comes to quality, homemade ice cream from Uncle Rays takes the cake.
Competition between the two establishments hasn’t become a public affair, but only one ice cream parlor can reign supreme. After 45 years, Uncle Rays continues to be the number one ice cream parlor in Fenton. With their amount of combinations, alternate ice cream options, seasonal homemade flavors and overall good vibes, Uncle Rays is better than The Scoop of Fenton.
