Content warning/Editors note: this review will feature spoilers for “Outer Banks” season four, part one.
This season of “Outer Banks” is full of twists and turns no one knew were to come. This season follows the pogues John B. (Chase Stokes), JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey) and Pope Heyward (Jonathan Daviss) around the coast of Outer Banks while they are on the hunt for a sacred amulet.
The pogues are out of cash from their last adventure and looking for more. Wes Genrette (David Jensen) offers them a job to retrieve an amulet that supposedly is cursed by Blackbeard’s wife and has been tormenting Genrette’s family with its powers.
In the seasons before this one, the main storyline was focused on John B. and his father. Now though, it has been focused on JJ. It is common knowledge that JJ has problems with his father Luke (Gary Weeks), who is an alcoholic who is never around; and when he is he is physically abusive towards JJ. At the end of this season though we learn that Luke is not JJ’s biological father. His father is actualy Genrette’s son-in-law Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane). This is a big shock as JJ is a pogue but because he is related to Genrette and Groff, does this make him a kook?
I enjoyed that we finally got to learn more about JJ this season. JJ is a good friend and has proven time and time again that he would do anything for any of his buddies. One example of this is in season three when the cops were chasing after the pogues and Topper for stealing the gold cross off of the train and JJ stayed back and distracted the police.
It has been mentioned and shown in the show that JJ was abused by Luke and that they don’t have a good relationship. With that being said, we don’t know a whole lot about Luke or anything about JJ’s family. He deserves a good storyline because he is an interesting and well-written character and I’m excited to see what happens next.
My main complaint this season is that they are releasing this season in two parts. It is annoying to wait for the second half of the season when the last season came out almost a year ago. Other than that I have enjoyed the new episodes thus far.
Even though I feel that no season of Outer Banks will ever top the first season and the nostalgic feeling that is embedded in it, I enjoyed the first half of the season four episodes and I’m quite eager to watch the second half.
