As November begins in Michigan, post-season sports begin. Playoffs can be a stressful time for many athletes with a win or go home circumstance. Not all athletes continue their sports into playoffs but Fenton has many athletes representing FHS across many sports into the postseason.
The cross country team recently competed in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) state finals on Nov. 2 at Michigan International Speedway. At the state championship meet, two of the team’s athletes competed, freshmen Gavin Katic and Gerard Gilmour. Katic placed 32nd with a time of 15:48 and Gilmour placed 120th with a time of 16:29; these times were personal records for both. Their personal achievements place them as the first and third fastest freshmen in Fenton history.
Fenton’s football team also elongated their season after their win in the Flint Metro League Stripes Division. Their first playoff football game came against a local team in Linden on Nov. 1. The Tigers lost by a score of 42-14 against the Eagles. The football team ended the season with a winning record, finishing 7-3 and 5-0 in the Flint Metro League Stripes Division. Both Fenton’s cheerleaders and band members ended their season by the side of the football team.
The volleyball team remains red-hot going into the playoffs. Fenton volleyball won the Flint Metro League Over-All and Stripes Division, beating Lake Fenton 3-1 to win the championship. The team’s postseason has just begun with hopes on the state finals; they play Nov. 7 at Dexter in the district semifinal against Hartland.
Fenton’s soccer team’s playoffs began earlier this year when they nearly lost to Linden in the district championship game on Oct. 19. This team still managed to make the district championship game even though they lost their head coach half-way through the season. This soccer team bounced back from a string of various losses early in the season; eventually they found their stride and surged into the playoffs this year. They ended their season with an overall record of 6-4-1 and tied for fifth in their league.
Fenton’s girls golf team, led by a group of seniors, ended their season earlier this October. The team competed in the MHSAA girls golf regional at the Golf Club of Coldwater on Oct. 8: The team attributes their success to the strong senior leadership on the team. This team placed second in the Flint Metro League championship, only 14 strokes behind first place Goodrich.
The Fenton girls swim team has dominated the Greater Flint swim and dive scene, winning every single Flint Metro swim and dive title since the inception. The team is projected to send a host of girls to the Michigan state championships on Nov. 22 and 23. The event will be held at Oakland University Natatorium. The girls had an individual state champion last year and have sights on repeating it this year. The team’s next meet is at Brandon High, where they will continue their season at the Flint Metro League swim meet on Nov 7, 8 and 9. The team is also hosting the MHSAA dive regional at Fenton this year on Nov. 14.
The boys tennis team ended their season Oct. 8 at their mid-Michigan regional meet at Heritage High. The boys team consisted of many first time players, including an exchange student. The boys tennis team has the potential for growth with all their first year talent. The team believes it’s only up from here for Fenton boy’s tennis. The boy’s tennis team ended their league in 5th with a .500 record of 4-4.
Fenton’s sporting program has sent many teams and athletes to the state championships each year, and this is just a glimpse into the accomplishments Fenton athletes have made this season.
