With winter seasons approaching us the FHS winter sport season has begun. The winter sports are, boys and girls basketball, bowling, girls competitive cheer, gymnastics, hockey, ski, boys swim and dive, and wrestling.
Requirements to be eligible for a winter sport:
- Sign up on final forms to register for a Winter sport.
- Turn in a completed Physical Form (dated after Feb. 15, 2022)
- Submit Pay to Participate fee ($230) via E-Funds
Boys Basketball
The Boys basketball season starts Nov. 11. The coaches for this season of basketball are FHS teacher Todd Schroeder for varsity, Cornell Ballard for JV and Paul Stark for the freshman team. Tryouts for Boys Basketball are on Nov. 11 from 3-5 p.m. for freshman and JV, and 5-7 p.m. for varsity. Tryouts are located in the main gym. The first boys basketball game is scheduled for Nov. 25.
Schroeder hopes that the boys this year will match last year’s team’s achievements. He aspires to win games like the Stripes Division, return to the Flint Metro League Championship and win a Michigan High School Athletic Association district title.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball season starts Nov. 18. The Coaches for this season are AGS teacher Don Kutchey for the varsity team and FHS teacher Ellie Tyrrell for the JV team. Tryout dates for girls basketball are in the main gym from Nov. 18-22 from 3-5 p.m. The first game for girls basketball is scheduled for Dec. 2.
“My goal for this year is to create a really strong and flexible team,” Tyrrell said; she wants the girls to work hard and ensure her athletes have many opportunities going forward with the sport. Tyrrell likes “to take time at the beginning of the year to allow the girls to set goals for themselves and for the team”.
Bowling
The Bowling season starts on Nov. 18, and Ron Little coaches both boys and girls bowling. Tryout dates are Nov. 15, 19 and 22 at Holly Lanes from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The bowling team’s first competition is Nov. 30.
“Although bowling is an individual sport, the team as a whole is very competitive,” Little said.
His goal for the team as a whole is to make it to states. He says that bowlers’ goals vary from bowler to bowler.
“We are always looking for more people that want to bowl or learn the sport, so if anyone is interested please sign up on final forms and come out to tryouts,” Little said.
Girls Competitive Cheer
Girls competitive cheer starts Nov. 11, with Beth Lockhart as the new coach. Their first competition is scheduled for Nov. 25. Tryout dates are Nov. 11-12 at 3-5 p.m. and Nov. 13 at 6-9 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym. Their first meet is scheduled for Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. and is home. .
Gymnastics
The coach for Varsity Gymnastics this year is Dani Wolanin. Gymnastics has already started their season. Dec. 20th is their first dual meet against tecumseh at home. And they will have several invite meets before the dual meet.
Hockey
The hockey team’s sports season started this year on Oct. 28, with Jason Warda as the coach. Their first game of the season is scheduled for Nov. 11.
Ski
The Ski season starts Nov. 11. Their first competition is scheduled for Dec. 4. For more information contact Coach Dave Sprague at [email protected].
Boys Swim and Dive
The boys swim and dive team season starts Nov. 18 with FHS teacher Brad Jones as the swimming coach and AGS teacher Jenna Seelbinder as the diving coach. The swimmers and divers have their first meet on Dec. 7.
The FHS boys swim and dive team is a recreational sport, so no tryouts are required to join the team.
“Hard work is always our recipe for success,” Jones said. He hopes for the boys this season to make it to the Metros League Championship Meet.
Wrestling
The wrestling season starts Nov. 11 with Buddy Poyner as their coach. The Wrestlers have their first match on Dec. 4. For more information on Wrestling, email Poyner at [email protected].
Winter sports are approaching us quickly or already have, while our fall sports are heading to their seasons end. All of the coaches are ready to approach this season as a fresh start and get to meet their new team members, and reunite with their old members.
