Fenton High offers several different clubs appealing to many crowds. A club can be a way of meeting new people and learning new skills. FHS offers 30+ unique clubs. This series will feature the clubs of FHS along with what they entail. “Beyond The Bell” is meant to showcase the clubs at FHS and what they are.
At FHS there are several clubs that are offered to the student body. All of these clubs are engaging and a great way for students to meet new people who have similar interests to them. One of the many clubs FHS houses is the book club, which meets on the first Monday of every month.
The president of the book club is sophomore Emma Roberts. She was elected last spring by the other members. Her duties are to “choose three books every month for the members to vote on as our book of the month and create slides to show at each meeting.”
Roberts said she tries to put some thought into the three books she chooses, “I always try to pick books that are themed around the month and upcoming holidays.”
The January book of the month is “A Winter In New York” by Josie Silver. This shows how Roberts matched the books to the month and holidays because it is a winter book.
The book club’s social media coordinator is junior Haven Selby. Selby took over the book club’s Instagram account this year and runs it all by herself. The account’s name is fhsbook.club
Selby is responsible for “designing and posting the book of the month announcement and reminders about meetings.”
Selby said her favorite book they have read so far this school year was the Oct. book of the month, “One of Us Is Lying”
“‘One of Us Is Lying’ was my favorite,” Selby said, “because it has relatable struggles and it’s very engaging.”
At each meeting, there is a discussion over the book of the month and each member needs to have the book read with questions or annotations.
“Whenever I am reading the book,” Selby said, “I note down things that I had questions about.”
Any student of FHS is welcome to join the book club at any time. The meetings are held in English teacher Heather Mulligan’s classroom and are very simple. At every meeting, the officers describe the three books that there are to choose to vote from. After they describe the books, Roberts sends out a Google Form so the members can vote on which book they would like to read. Then once everyone votes, they announce the winner. Each meeting ends with a discussion about the last book of the month.
Book club is an easy way to be involved in the school and to meet new people. Anyone can join at any time if interested. If interested, contact Mulligan or Roberts. Meetings are after school on the first Monday of every month in room 10-106.
