Varsity boys and girls basketball sweep Swartz Creek
December 21, 2015
Continuing their start to the Metro season, both varsity boys and girls basketball teams mark their Metro Conference season standings with boys at 1-1 and girls at 2-0 after they won their games against Swartz Creek on Dec 18. For the girls, the score was 50-46, and for the boys, it was 63-54.
“For both the boys and the girls, it was a nice start to the season,” varsity girls basketball coach Rebecca Moore said. “There was a lot of selfish playing coming from Swartz Creek, and because of that, it enabled both teams to pull ahead.”
Players have said that both the boys and the girls teams demonstrated good teamwork. During the girls game, players such as freshman Chloe Idoni and senior Sarah Cummings both scored and rebounded well; Idoni scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds, and Cummings with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
“Swartz Creek did play well, but it seemed to me that their team was not as united as we were,” Cummings said. “They would have one or two girls that worked really well during one part of the game, and a couple other girls that would play well during a different part; all of us were able to play well throughout the entire game.”
Senior Jake Cairnduff has said that teamwork is an important aspect to their performance during the games; senior Chris Gilbert and junior Nick Wyrick were a couple of the players who showed this aspect during the game.
“It’s not just the players that contribute; the coach also helps with teamwork, and I believe that Coach Gilbert is great with helping us work as a team,” Cairnduff said. “I believe that we were much more united, as a team, over them and that helped us overcome and win the game.”
The next game for the boys is at home against Hartland on Jan. 5, 2016. The next league game for both the boys and the girls is at home against Kearsley on Jan. 8.
