Follow senior Tess DuPei through a day in her life as a drum major.

“In general, I like to be alone, which makes it hard to make friends. If I can, I’ll try to avoid the situation, but if I can’t, then I just have to face it head on and try my best. If it’s awkward, it’s awkward. I’m new to Fenton; it’s a lot different. But marching band helps me open up; the upperclassmen seem to take to new people pretty well, especially the freshman. I just need people to be understanding and know that I’m not from here. I don’t know how things work very well.” - freshman Ethan Petts

Marching band is my passion. It’s a big part of my life. I spend 90 percent of my week doing stuff related to marching band. In the high school marching band, I’m the drum major. I’m also in a winter drumline, I play bass drum. Being drum major is a lot of responsibility, you’re basically the leader of the band. You represent the entirety of Fenton bands wherever you go.

While playing their new song, Andy Perkins band class played for David Thornton, the Michigan State University Associate Director Of Bands and Director of the Spartan Marching Band on Nov. 16. Thornton came in to help the Fenton Band, and directed them for 2nd hour, helping them achieve perfection in their notes.
