Teacher by day, adding more to their salary by night
February 15, 2018
Whether it is during the summer or a nightly commitment, many teachers work second jobs to add money to their annual average wage of 61,560 dollars, according to the Detroit Free Press. In addition, a 2016 report from the National Center for Education Statistics found that about 16 percent of teachers across the nation do work jobs outside of the school system. Among these teachers are Vera Hazlett, Brett Mead, Patricia Gray and Ranae Muzer.
“People usually ask me for birthday cakes, but I also make cakes for events like retirements and occasional weddings. I took some classes at a community college in the pastry department, so I've been trained on the classical decorating. I’ve also taken all the classes offered at Michaels through the Wilton program, I ended up working for Wilton and taught cake decorating classes at Michaels. The greatest thing ever is pictures of people with my cakes, because they’re just so happy when they have them and it’s something that’s special to them. I’ve done princesses in the past, but in this last week, I’ve made a Mickey Mouse Cake of the character named Tootles, which was a cartoon image. There’s a lot to worry about with baking, like maybe you won’t get orders or maybe a cake is just too hard. With teaching, I really enjoy it and I’ve studied it so much longer that I feel more confident in my performance.” -Vera Hazlett
