After a victorious 2024-2025 season, the Fenton Varsity Competitive Cheer team (FVC) ended on a high note. The team of 27 athletes broke school records, won several competitions and even held a steady place on the weekly rankings posted by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) throughout the entirety of the season.
FVC’s first competition of the season was the Competitive Cheer Coaches Association of Michigan (CCCAM) on Dec. 13 at Fenton High, and they had a strong showing. On their first time on the mat, the squad managed to break the total score school record. FVC took first place at this competition, but that was just the beginning for this victorious squad.
Junior Evie Metcalfe said, “I think that winning the first comp proved to us that the hard work that we had been doing this season has been paying off, and if we were to keep it up, then eventually the rewards would come.”
After their first competition of the 2024-2025 season, MHSAA and the instagram account, @michcompcheer posted rankings of the top 10 D2 teams in the state of Michigan; Fenton was ranked number three behind the 12-time state champions, Gibraltar Carlson, and the six-time state champions, Allen Park. This was another huge accomplishment for the squad. FVC stayed on the rankings for the remainder of the season, never dropping below the number five team in the state. As the season continued, the competitive cheer team made school history just about every time they took the floor. By the end of the year, this specific squad had broken 14 school records. They broke the total score team record five times, the round one record two times, the round two record three times and the round three record four times.
This was a huge goal for the girls this season, however, FVC had other goals in mind they were working to accomplish. One of them was to take their Flint Metro League (FML) title back, which they lost to Swartz Creek in 2022, and they did just that. At every metro meet, FHS took first place by a notable margin. Their scores and overall placement at all three FML competitions put them above their competitors, and FVC finished as Flint Metro Champions on Feb. 5.
Senior Liz Beaven last won a Flint Metro title as a freshman.
“It’s a full circle moment after winning the FML title both my freshman and senior year,” Beaven said. “It’s a great way to end my senior season.
Despite their strong season and high ranking going into the regional competition, Fenton Cheer fell short of their ultimate goal, which was to make it to State Finals for the first time in FHS history. The regional competition was held at Fenton High on Feb. 22. The squad came in fifth place, just 1.15 points away from taking fourth, which would have sent them to states at Central Michigan University.
“Our region has every top team in the state including the two teams that have either been state champions or runner up for the past 20 years,” Beaven said. “This makes it difficult to place at regionals.”
