The indoor track club, Altius, is becoming a successful team at Fenton, sending kids to state and national championships. Earlier in the season, the indoor track club went to Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) and Grand Valley State University for races. Most recently, the team sent a relay team to Central Michigan University (CMU) and is now sending students to the New Balance Nationals on March 13.
On Feb. 15, two members of the indoor track team went to SVSU and raced in the one mile. Freshman Gavin Katic ran 4:32.2 for his mile, alongside his teammate freshman Gerard Gilmore who ran 4:39.01 in the mile. These times qualified both Katic and Gilmore for the upcoming national competition.
On March 8, a relay team consisting of Katic, Gilmore, freshman Gavin Nakai and sophomore Grant Hunault headed to CMU for the state championship meet. The crew competed in the distance medley relay. The team finished second in their heat, 13th overall, with a time of 11:04.03.
Following the state competition, Katic and Gilmore will head to the New Balance National Championship in Boston, March 13-16.
According to Katic, although the indoor track team is not currently an officially recognized sport at FHS, they are making it far in the off-season, qualifying for several races.
