No district-wide calendar for Fenton Area Public Schools, month-by-month policy in place

As of Oct. 4, Fenton Area Public Schools (FAPS) has no district calendar for the current school year. Rather, it is going on a month-by-month basis because of ongoing negotiations with the teacher’s union. The district has announced dates for Spring Break and Winter Break, along with this letter explaining the situation.

“There are laws that allow School Boards to publish or impose a calendar if agreements are not met,” Superintendent Adam Hartley said. “At this time we will continue working with the union to be collaborative and look at publishing the calendar each month. Typically when there is not a new contract, last year’s calendar is followed as much as possible.”

Negotiations with the Teachers’ Union include salary, benefits, and the upcoming district calendar.

“Once a new contract is settled, the calendar will be published,” Hartley said. “We are meeting next week to continue the negotiations. The state just approved the school aid budget and we now know what the revenue will be for the 2019-2020 school year. Until then, we will publish/announce the upcoming calendar as we work with the union. We must follow the law and continue to negotiate in good faith. ”

In the meantime, out-of-the-norm adjustments to the schedule are uncertain. Check here for updates on the calendar.
