Fenton High’s book club was newly established in the spring of the 2022-23 school year by co-founders seniors Landis Canada and Cassadra Tatton. The pair expressed a mutual love for reading, and wanted to take steps to create a community centered around literature.
“I wanted to start a book club because I have always loved to read and was always looking to find my next book,” Tatton said. “Landis and I decided a book club could be a fun and supportive space for everyone who loves to read to come together and we wanted to make that happen.”
The club meets on the first Monday of every month in room 10-106, or in the Media Center. The book of the month is chosen from a list of member recommendations, then through a club-wide voting process. The structure of the meetings follows a relaxed-socratic structure in which members meet to discuss their thoughts, opinions and perspectives on the month’s book.
Each meeting is open to all members, and they are encouraged to come to each meeting to share their thoughts and opinions, meet new people and enjoy all of the snacks provided.
FHS Book Club has expanded greatly since its inception, accumulating over 40 members, and has created a welcoming community upheld by mutual love for literature.
“I hope Book club continues to be a welcoming and supportive community for all the new underclassmen,” Tatton said, “and continues to gain more and more members in the years to come.”
