Students are shoulder to shoulder each day in the hallways, but how much do they really know about the people walking next to them? This series will feature the students of FHS along with their talents, hobbies and passions. “A Closer Look” is meant to showcase what makes the students of FHS who they are.
Many students have a dream of becoming an athlete or an artist. The case for Senior Kimmy Burkett is no different: She has always been interested in the arts and got into sports after COVID. She is a part of several teams throughout all three sports seasons. When Burkett isn’t busy with sports, she spends her time exercising creativity, and enjoying activities such as fashion design.
Burkett has played many different sports: “I’m part of the sideline cheerleading squad,” she said, “that is just my fall season.” Along with sideline cheerleading, she dives in the fall as well. She has also participated in competitive cheer and gymnastics during the winter. For the past two springs, she has been in tennis.
During the swim and dive season this past fall, Burkett placed in the county meet. After pushing herself for the first half of the season Burkett was rewarded with second place in the county meet for diving.
After COVID Burkett struggled to stay focused in school, she discovered that sports helped her with this. “Doing a sport helps with me wanting to go to school,” Burkett said, “because if you’re not at school, you can’t be at your sport.” Sports have helped her stay focused on school while still having fun and making connections.
In the future, Burkett plans to go to Savannah College of Art and Design, where she has stayed for the past two summers, working on completing a semester’s worth of coursework. In Burkett’s Advanced Placement art class, students are working on their portfolios, which could earn them college credits. Her portfolio is “centered around the theme of fashion as armor,” Burkett said, “like protection devices and real-world events.”
For a short period of time, Burkett had her own Etsy shop where she sold crochet items. After a while, Burkett stopped her online business and began to focus on other hobbies such as fashion design.
Burkett will continue to create art and participate in sports throughout her senior year, spreading her creativity as well as cheering on the teams she is a part of.
