Fenton High offers several different clubs appealing to many crowds. A club can be a way of meeting new people and learning new skills. FHS offers 30+ unique clubs. This series will feature the clubs of FHS along with what they entail. “Beyond The Bell” is meant to showcase the clubs at FHS and what they are.
One of the newest clubs at FHS is the Science National Honor Society (SNHS). The club is in its first year at FHS and appeals to students interested in science. The club has benefits many students interested in pursuing science into college; members of the club are eligible for SNHS to support their college education by offering an annual scholarship as well as the fact SNHS adds science merit to applications. The requirements of induction to SNHS include having an overall GPA of at least 3.0 with a 3.5 or higher GPA in science. This club is only available to high school juniors and seniors.
Sponsoring the club are science teachers Kimberly Wilhite and Charles Miller.
“The club entails volunteer hours in the sciences as of right now, including STEM and math nights in our Fenton elementary buildings,” Wilhite said. “We are also working on partnering with local universities to have speakers come in or have students either observe or help collect data for university student research.”
Leading SNHS at FHS is senior Lucas Hamlin. Hamlin was the lead in the development of a SNHS branch in FHS. He filled out all necessary papers and procedures to get the club off the ground.
“I decided to start SNHS because I wanted to provide an outlet for kids with interest in science while also helping our community,” Hamlin said. “Being the president has been fun bringing together a great group of people and putting ideas together.”
SNHS hopes to grow in the future starting new traditions at FHS such as a science fair. This science club deals with interactions with accomplished scientists, along with the promotion of science among the next generation. If the interested in all thing consider SNHS as a honorable club.
