This year in sports, lots of amazing moments have already occurred. With the Eagles knocking off the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, opening day in Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs starting, things have been pretty exciting. But when summertime hits, what sports should people be watching and keeping an eye out for? Here are some sports to check out this summer:
One of the most popular sports in the summer is baseball. This year in the MLB, there have been lots of surprises and disappointments, and lots of questions that still don’t have answers. In the National League, the Dodgers have the best record in the MLB and are the favorites to win the World Series, but the Mets and Cubs aren’t too far behind. In the American League, the Yankees are trying to return to the World Series but will have to get by the uprising Detroit Tigers, who are currently 27-15. The Mariners and Guardians are also not too far behind either. The MLB All-Star game and Home Run Derby are also being set to happen at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, from July 13 to 16.
Another popular sport lots of people will be keeping an eye out for is soccer. Being the most popular sport in the world, according to WorldAtlas, there is almost always a soccer game going on any day during the summer. From June 14 to July 13, the Club World Cup will be taking place across the country at 12 different stadiums. Click here for a schedule of the events: FIFA World Cup 2025
In golf, the 2025 U.S. Open will be held from June 12-15 in Pittsburgh. The Ryder Cup, which is held every two years, will also be held in Long Island, New York, between 12 American and 12 European golfers.
As Americans are following tennis more, the game is becoming increasingly popular and fun to watch. According to the United States Tennis Association (USTA), one in every 12 Americans played tennis in 2024, the highest proportion on record. The 2025 Wimbledon, which has also been increasing in popularity according to Statista, will take place in London from June 30-July 13, followed by the 2025 U.S Open Tennis tournament, which will go from Aug. 24-Sept. 7 in New York and includes a grand prize of 75 million, where some of the best tennis players in the world are set to meet.
Other sports include race car driving, where the Indianapolis Grand Prix will be held in May, the Spanish Grand Prix will be held in June, and the Italian Grand Prix will be held in September. The NBA and NHL Playoffs are also set to end around June, with exciting match-ups still to come to see who will emerge as the champion.
Another year of summer has brought more sports to enjoy. This year, from golf to track, there are lots of sports events happening everywhere around the world.
