JV Baseball handles Clio

A fourth inning run to come back from down 2-1 helped fuel a Fenton Tiger run to eventually win the game, 9-4. The Mustangs of Clio held the Tigers’ batters in check for the first half of the game, but the top of the order for Fenton was too much to keep quiet.

The Tigers fifth inning run to go up 5-2 was fueled by freshman David Pietryga’s go-ahead two run double. After that, the Tigers were able to knock in a few more runs, and hold on to the lead with the help of sophomore Troy Smigelski’s pitching efforts. Smigelski pitched all seven innings of the team’s first game.

“I was a little tired because I threw so many pitches,” Smigelski said. “Our team has great chemistry. We really can rely on each other, and our coach helps keep the mood light and motivate us.”

That chemistry has helped the team greatly this season. With the win against Clio, the Tigers won their ninth straight game to kick off the season, and remained undefeated with the victory, which was not as certain as past victories this year.

“During the first inning, Clio executed on some defensive mistakes by us,” sophomore Brendan Triola said. “After the first inning we picked it up defensively, and after Troy struck out the side to end the fourth, we were able to gather momentum and get our bats going.”
