Girls varsity tryouts held at Genesis Health Club

The fresh spring air blowing through the air, the crisp smell of new tennis ball, and the “twonk” of rackets hitting the ball back and forth. This is a normal day on the tennis courts for members of the girls JV and Varsity tennis teams. Tryouts to become a member of either of the teams will be held on Monday, March 14.

“I’ve been playing tennis for about five years now,” senior Katy Kurncz. “I’ve been a member of the varsity team since my freshman year.”

Tryouts will be open to all freshmen and senior girls.

“Last year I was on the JV team,” sophomore Leah Krantz said. “I’m hoping to make the varsity team this year. I’m excited to get closer to the girls and I’m ready to work on getting better with everyone.”

Until the weather gets warmer, practices will be held at the Genesis Health Club in the morning before school. As the weather progressively gets nicer, practices will be held after school on the tennis courts.

“The practices are not usually so intense, but it can definitely have its days,” Krantz said. “For tryouts, I’m going to work on form and consistency. I’ve been practicing two times a week with the coach and the rest of the team in preparation for tryouts. A normal day at practice usually consists of becoming more consistent with your shots. Both coaches are very friendly, and have taught me a lot.”

This season, many players are trying out with little to no tennis experience, including multiple freshmen.

“This is the first year I have played tennis” freshman Chloe Adams said. “I’m joining the team because I’ve always wanted to try it out and this seemed this the perfect time to start. I’m really excited to improved my tennis skills. I’m also looking forward to spending time with my friends and the rest of the team.”

For the players who do not make the varsity line up or are new to the sport, more spots will be available on the JV team for those who wish to participate.

“We only have five open spots in the lineup,” coach Gary Ballard said. “We have a lot of new faces from the JV team that have been working hard to get one of those spots. We have a few freshmen that are also going to tryout. It looks like 18 girls will be trying out for 14 spots, so it will not be easy.”

Tryouts for the varsity team will be held Mar.14 at the Genesee Health Club from 5:30 a.m., and will last until 7:00 am. If you wish to try out for the junior varsity team, t team tryouts will be held Mar. 14 after school in the Auxiliary Gym.
