The Fenton Academics Team fundraises to pay for future championships

Competing in subjects like social studies, English and math, the middle school students of The Fenton Academic Games spend their free time playing scholastic board games. On Sept. 17, The A-Team held a fundraising book fair at Barnes and Noble connected to the Genesee Valley Mall.

“It’s a program at the middle school, for 6th through 8th graders and we just started it up last year,” math teacher Mike Pearce said. “We used to have the academic games program a long time ago when I went to Fenton.” dsc_0012

Pearce and his team are using the Barnes and Nobles Book Fair to their advantage, not only are they displaying their skills, they are fundraising to go to the championships.

“We support organizations like the Fenton Academic Games in order to help the community,” manager of Barnes and Noble Katie Hugelier said.“The organization’s always make a lot of money so it’s a great way to fundraise.”

In order to compete at states, The A-Team needs around $250 per member. They will be competing against cities and towns like Ann Arbor, Jackson and Utica.dsc_0003

“The state championships are a 2 to 3 day event and every team in the state competes in Grand Rapids,” AGS 7th grader Chase Gibson said. “Whoever wins states goes to nationals which is in a different part of the country every year.”

The A-Team will be having another book fair fundraiser on Jan. 14. If maintain third person missed this book fair, can still contribute by buying a Barnes and Noble product using The A-Team’s code: 11929296.
