After hearing her name being called, senior Samantha Baxter walked up to receive her honorable mention award from the Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. Baxter attended an award ceremony on March 3 where she, along with other students, were awarded for their art work.

“I found out about this competition through Fenton alumni Erin Tesner,” Baxter said. “Her parents go to the same church as me and they let me know about it.”

Baxter submitted two paintings to the competition both of which represented Fenton. She placed second out of 2000 submissions.

“I sent in two of my paintings,” Baxter said. “They were both of downtown Fenton, one was the pond and the other was the river they were my favorite paintings. Getting the award was cool because they said that there were over 2000 entries.”

As a four year member of the arts program, art teacher Kristin Mcdowell has seen Baxter’s art grow from day one.

“She is really a detailed artist and she spends a lot of time on whatever she is doing,” Mcdowell said. “It’s been really nice watching her from a beginning artist to now seeing her art work and is always a joy to have in class.”

Baxter plans to attend Lawrence Technical University for architecture and design, and uses her award to motivate her to keep creating.
