When scheduling comes around and it’s time to do course selections for next year, juniors and seniors have the option to do dual enrollment options with U of M Flint but there is also Mott Community College. This can offer credits in both high school and college.

“Mott has college classes that transfer to the university of your choosing,” senior Danielle Zawlocki said. “As the semesters change my classes change, in first semester I took Psychology and English 101 and during second semester I’m taking Anatomy and English 102. The school pays for the tuition but, we have to pay for books. With block scheduling it takes both of my 4th hours.”

There are options to do dual enrollment as a freshman or sophomore but students usually are not able to get freshman scholarships at any college, which can offer more scholarship money, because they have too many college credits.

“Students get college credit for the classes that they take at the community college,” Counselor Vicky Russell said. “Students have to make sure that the college of their choice will accept these credits before transfering. If students get enough college credits they are not going to qualify for some of the freshman scholarships, which is a detriment. After students get enough college credits they are going to be looked at as transfer students, instead of freshman in college.”

Community college can be used to get basic college courses done for less tuition money. The credits are meant to be transferable to almost all universities.

“I’m taking the prerequisites, which are the basic classes like math, science and english,” Zawlocki said. “I could have taken classes like debate, medical terms or speech classes. This will help me save college time in the future, about a semester, because of all the classes I’m getting credits for and I’ll get to save money.”

Students interested in dual enrollment with Mott Community College should talk to their counselor to see their full range of options.
