Students looking to go into the medical field or related fields can now get a glimpse attending Health Care Career Day offered through Hurley’s Medical Center (HMC).

“There are opportunities for all types of students at Hurley,” Director of Volunteer Services Jordan Liechti said. “I know that you are here to bump up your resume and get the hands on experience, so let me help you do it in the most mutually beneficial way. My goal since has been to broaden the opportunities available to students. I want students to be able to serve in a way that it is beneficial for their growth as a young adult preparing for their future, but also in a way that gets you excited about volunteering.”

The HealthCare Career Day does not strictly affiliate only with medical students as many different volunteer experiences are presented to other associated fields such as marketing and Information Technology (IT).

“Most students come to me because they want to go to medical school or they dream of becoming a nurse,” Liechti said, “and that is wonderful because this is definitely a great place for them to get real hospital experience. However, we have a lot of other opportunities too. We have an amazing marketing department that can always use an extra set of hands in the IT Department who accepts multiple volunteers a year. Also, there are opportunities to work alongside my amazing colleagues in the Foundation, if nonprofits inspire you.”

To join the program, students must be in grades 10, 11 or 12 and of 15 years of age. There is no entry fee included for the event and parental consent is required if the student is under 18 years of age. The career day is held every third Friday of the month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“To volunteer, you first fill out the online application,” Liechti said. “You will then receive an automatic email inviting you to an orientation meeting here at HMC. During the orientation you will meet me and I will go over all of the volunteer requirements and responsibilities. After you have fulfilled your requirements, we will then brainstorm to find the service area that interests you and works into your schedule.”

Students that are interested in volunteering, have many options that they can engage through Hurley. HMC not only offers Career day but other special event volunteer opportunities including The Crim, Hospital Elder Life Program, Children’s miracle network events and other wellness initiatives through the community.
