Opinion: Student Council should have more responsibility
March 11, 2020
Student Council’s responsibilities at Fenton High are limited. Their responsibilities include organizing the winter dance, homecoming activities, and donating to charities, but not much else. Numerous other responsibilities could be taken on to create a larger student body influence. These responsibilities should include taking on the student bodies’ concerns, whether they are about a teacher or policy, organizing fundraisers and organizing more school activities. As a member of the Student Council, I think our responsibilities should expand so we can take on a larger role in the school and community.
When a student or group of students has a concern about a teacher, school policy, or any school related concerns, they should bring it up to Student Council who should then work to fix the situation. According to the Carey High School webpage, “… the Student Council is the voice of the student body. They help share student ideas, interests and concerns with the school wide community.” At Fenton High, students often don’t express their concerns, therefore, they aren’t put into action. If concerns were expressed to the Student Council, the school would benefit and have a larger student body influence.
The Student Council should be in charge of planning numerous fundraisers throughout the year for the school and to help the community. According to the West Wing school webpage, “Last year… we donated $800 to a student’s family at a school in our district…” Fenton High does donate money to various projects, however most of the money comes from dances. Hardly any specific fundraisers have been run by Student Council. This can be changed to give Student Council a higher role in the school and in the community.
Dances, the Homecoming pep assembly, Powder Puff and Powder Tuff are all school activities planned by Student Council, but there should be more. Valentines Day Grams are a fun tradition at Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School; Student Council should plan more activities like this that are fun and simple, something students at Fenton High can enjoy without breaking the bank.
Overall, FHS Student Council’s responsibilities are extremely limited, which results in a weakened council. If we had more responsibility, we could have a greater impact on the student body and community, like we’re supposed to.
