Writer’s note: the following content contains spoilers for the novel “Divergent.”
In a world where society is separated into factors based on your personality, where would you fit in? Would you be with the brave soldiers of the world, or would you be sheltered in the trustworthy society of candor? The book “Divergent” by Veronica Roth is about a young group that rebels against the government’s way of separating them into factions, being barely 16 years old.
I personally love Divergent; the book is full of fantasy and heartfelt rebellion.
The book follows a girl who starts in the Abnegation faction, a faction for those who are selfless and often help those who are factionless. However, Beatrice Prior, the main character, dreams of living out her life in the Dauntless faction, a faction for the warriors, fighters and the brave few of the world.
The world she lives in is set in a dystopian Chicago. The rest of the world outside of Chicago being called the Fringe. And this post-apocalyptic world is perfect for those who love world-building within the books they read.
When the day comes to decide her fate, she chooses the Dauntless faction.
Throughout the initiation process in the Dauntless faction, Tris is barely surviving. Until the last test, the fear test in which she thrives. Tris is known as something called a divergent; they are hidden from the world, they fit into more than one faction, something that is very frowned upon. Divergents are known for having abnormally quick time scores on the fear test.
I loved the book, and to avoid spoiling much of it, I won’t go into details. The drama of these dystopian books makes them a must-read for fans of Dystopian books.
It’s a perfect book for “Hunger Games” and “Maze Runner” fans for the post-apocalyptic world-building and the government rebellion themes within the book. “Human Games” fans are most likely to love the factions because it’s so similar to how they have different districts.
