With hours spent on constructing robots and final preparations, students on the Fenton robotics team advanced to the robotics competition that took place on April 11, and Sunday, Apr. 12. This became a very large event in Michigan, with Fenton going up against 42 different teams. Fenton’s team, the Titanium Tigers, spent Thursday and Friday that same week setting up in the high school’s gym and making final preparations for the competition. The results concluded with Fenton taking first place, featuring all 42 teams. Students were able to get a new experience working with other teams from around Michigan to create and learn new strategies for the competition.
“My experience was great; it was so cool to meet other teams and learn about their experiences in robotics,” freshman Amelia Fravel said. “I really enjoyed all the energy coming from the stands.”
This competition was the first large event that Fenton High has hosted. This event took place in the gym with the hours the students on the team spent creating preparations that ensured a satisfactory viewing of the game.
“The experience was really good; it’s really interesting to see the progression of the game this season and how other teams have improved their robots between competitions,” sophomore Liam Maitland said. “I personally learned quite a bit about working with others, as the driver, I worked with two other randomly selected teams to earn points, so every match was a different situation to adapt to. A cool thing that we did is we set the highest score of the competition at 477 points, and through the playoffs went undefeated.”
The competition ended with Fenton having an undefeated playoff run, winning the ball throwing, setting a high score of 477 points and winning the competition, earning the team a place at the state championship event the following weekend.
Following the FHS event, they competed at the state championships on April 16-18 at Saginaw Valley State University. The team finished in third place in their division and ranked 24th in the state.
