New for the 2025-26 school year, FHS has implemented a new plan for handling SRT. The old format no longer met Michigan state regulations, so the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) team researched other options to fill the time and create a more useful period for students. That proposal then went to the curriculum director and superintendent of the school district and was approved in May of 2025. The format uses a new website, RTI Scheduler, which is made to allow students to sign up for sessions with a teacher.
Concerns were raised by staff when, year after year, Fenton students experienced a rising trend in class failure rates. “Last year, after the first semester for example,” MTSS Coach Deborah Chapman said, “we had 41% of our student body failing at least one class (389 students) and many students failed more than that.”
The new format is inspired by research done on Fenton High School’s sister school, Lowell, and introduces all students to the opportunity of going to a classroom/session that would benefit them.
“I like the way it makes students think about and prioritize their needs,” English Teacher Heather Mulligan said.
The new SRT format and use of response to intervention (RTI) scheduler are still being tweaked, but the district has high hopes that their hard work will pay off. This new step will hopefully put students on a path to success by promoting more student-teacher interaction and giving opportunities for students to try new things, and though it may take time to adjust to, it seems to have proven to help students already.
