On October 15, Fenton High’s International Baccalaureate French and Spanish classes went on a field trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts, where students were immersed in the museum’s extensive collection of influential French art. The IB French curriculum includes practicing looking at art from a critical and analytical perspective.
Throughout the year, students will also study French art, artifacts and sculptures that further their understanding of French culture and practice the IB goal to create global learners.
A docent from the museum led the tour, and students were able to see the works of prolific artists like Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Cassatt and Saurat.
“We saw Impressionist art like statues and busts and aristocratic structures,” Junior Elyse Morgan said. “My favorite exhibits were ones by Picasso and O’ Keefe.”
The trip offered students a chance to connect classroom learning with real-world cultural experiences. Many found inspiration in seeing the art they had previously studied come to life. The visit not only deepened their appreciation for French art but also strengthened their understanding of how creativity reflects history and identity.
