For more than two decades, Fenton High School’s jazz band has been a steady presence in the school’s music program. Over time, the group has continued to grow as both a musical ensemble and a creative space for students.
One of the most defining features of the FHS jazz band is how its music is selected. Rather than choosing pieces based solely on difficulty or tradition, Director of Bands Patrick Conaton, balances educational goals with student interest. Songs are chosen not only to help the band improve technique and ensemble skills, but also to reflect what students genuinely enjoy playing.
Musically, the jazz band focuses primarily on traditional swing, a foundational style of jazz. However, the repertoire extends beyond that core, incorporating funk, Latin jazz, blues and ballads.
“The music being a lot harder is my favorite part of jazz band,” first year member junior Izzy Ice said, “and there’s a lot of talented musicians in there that I really enjoy listening to.”
The jazz band also plays an active role in the school and local community through its performances. Each year, the group opens Concert in the Park, performing as the opening band for the Fenton Community Orchestra. In addition, the jazz band will perform at the FHS Bands’ Spring Concert on April 15, showcasing their work alongside other school ensembles.
It doesn’t matter the grade level; any FHS student interested in joining jazz band is welcome to audition. The due date for auditions for all classes in the 2026-2027 school year is Feb. 6.
