On Feb. 17, the Linden Fenton Lake Fenton (LFLF) gymnastics co-op took first place at their conference meet, claiming the conference championship again after four years.
The team had an undefeated record this season, having a season-high team total of 140.525 and preparing them for the conference championship meet. For the past four years, LFLF has lost this meet to Huron Valley United. “I was definitely a little nervous,” senior Jillian Shanahan said. “We had beat Huron Valley before though, so I knew we could pull through.”
Earlier in the season, LFLF won their duel against Huron Valley, propelling the team into the conference meet.
The team secured several placements and personal bests at the championship.
On vault, Lake Fenton junior Keira Sadler had the highest score on the team (9.05), which was her personal best, and took second in the Division 1 (D1) category. Lake Fenton sophomore Dayne Stucky earned an 8.75 and took third in the Division 2 (D2) category. Junior Molly Dixon had an 8.7 and placed fourth in the D2 category. Linden sophomore Mia Brown had the last team counting score with an 8.5, earning her eighth place also in the D2 category.
On bar, Sadler led the team with a 9.1, earning her second in the D1 category. Stucky had an 8.35, taking first in the D2 category. Shanahan had an 8.25, taking second place in the D2 category. The final counting score was Linden junior Alida Smith’s 8.075, which earned her a third place finish on the bar in the D2 category.
On beam, once again, Sadler led the team with a personal best of 9.625, earning her first in the D1 category. Dixon had a season best of 8.75, earning her second in the D2 category. Stucky had an 8.3 on the beam, earning her fifth in the D2 category. The final contributing score was Shanahan’s 7.7.
Leading the quad on the floor, Sadler scored a 9.1 and placed first in the D1 category. Shanahan also had a strong showing with a score of 9.025, earning her first in the D2 category. Dixon earned an 8.95, taking second place in the D2 category. Smith had an 8.925, taking third place in the D2 category.
Sadler took first All Around in the D1 category with a 36.875. Stucky placed second, Shanahan fourth, Dixon fifth, Smith sixth, and Brown seventh, all in the D2 category.
The team finished with a strong team total of 139.175, earning them first place at the meet, and claimed the conference champions and conference tournament champion title after four years of coming in close second.
LFLF qualifying gymnasts will compete at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals on March 9.
