Fenton High’s cross country team ran at regionals on Oct. 26 at Springfield Oaks County Park in Davisburg. The boys team placed sixth and the girls team placed 10th.
At this race, freshmen Gavin Katic and Gerard Gilmour qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Finals.
“I was seated highly coming into the regionals,” Katic said, “but I knew if I had a bad race on the day anything could happen so it felt relieving to officially take that next step into states.”
In the 5k regional race, Katic ran 16:05.79 and placed fourth. Gilmour ran 16:29.49 and placed tenth. The average time for a 15-year-old male in the 5k is around 20 to 23 minutes, according to Vitesse Running. This, of course, varies based on regional factors and competition level but means that Katic and Gilmour both did very well in their race.
Following the regional competition, the two competed in the state finals on Nov. 2 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Katic finished with a time of 15:48, placing 32nd out of 252 runners. Gilmour finished with a 16:29, placing 120th.
